WestJet is suspending direct flights between Montreal and Toronto between October 28, 2023 and April 28, 2024. Then, his plan is to restart this route in spring 2024.

At present, there is only one WestJet flight a day between Montreal and Toronto.

From now on, people in Quebec and Eastern Canada will have to find another way to use WestJet from their point of departure to Toronto.

Unfortunately, over the years, WestJet has reduced its services in Eastern Canada, concentrating instead on Western Canada:

• Reduce to one flight per day between Toronto and Ottawa
• Winter suspension of flights between Halifax and Montreal, Ottawa and St.John’s
• Suspension of flights between Halifax and Europe in summer 2023
• Shutdown of flights from Quebec City, Charlottetown, Sydney (Nova Scotia) and Fredericton to southern destinations

There are other ways to fly from Montreal to Toronto with WestJet or other options, but they can be more costly in terms of time and money. For example:

• Take a WestJet flight from Montreal to Calgary, then Calgary and Toronto
• Fly from Montreal to Toronto with another carrier(Air Canada or Porter)
• Use Via Rail or the bus

It’s a shame to see a Canadian airline stop serving a region, even temporarily.

On the other hand, Porter is becoming more and more of a big player, putting pressure on his competitors. We’ve seen it most recently with its new Porter Airlines mobile application, its status equivalence offer and a new service between Toronto and St.John’s.

This shutdown from October 28 coincides with the last day of Swoop’s existence, which WestJet will then merge with its operations.
